Why I Love the Fertility Awareness Method

September 9, 2016

Are you really aware of how your body works? Do you really know what's going on with your menstrual cycle? Don't worry you aren't alone! If you have found this site, you are probably interested in learning more about your body and your cycles.

The Fertility Awareness Method is a marvelous way to know each month if we have become pregnant or not! Now you don't have to go broke on all those unnecessary pregnancy test kits. FAM also allows us to identify the times that we are fertile and infertile which leads me to a NEWS FLASH. If you have never heard what I'm about to say, you are not going to believe it at first. NEWS FLASH: YOU CANNOT GET PREGNANT ON EVERY DAY OF YOUR CYCLE. There is only one day per cycle that you can get pregnant and a short fertile window around that time as well. We have grown up believing that we can get pregnant at any time, on any day of the month so we better not have sex and if we do we better be careful because it can happen at any time. This is the easy answer for our doctors and parents to give us. It's easier to say this rather than try to explain your body to you. Some people may have told you this because they really believed it and did not know any different. They weren't trying to trick you, they just didn't know any better.

Many of us don't really know about our cycles because we weren't taught it. Our parents didn't know so they didn't know what to tell us.  Our schools thought it was more important to teach us the Periodic Table of Elements rather than information about our Periods. Our doctors didn't teach us because they either didn't know or it was just easier and quicker to not explain. It has become the norm to allow someone else to have control over our bodies and to get a quick fix from medicine. Only this doesn't fix anything, it messes with everything. The birth control pill has given us the false belief that we are supposed to have 28 day cycles. On the pill, we have these fake bleeds (also known as breakthrough or withdrawal bleeding) on a certain day each month. We don't know any different. All we know is that when reach a certain age (sometimes as young as 12-14) we get on the birth control pill. We do not even allow our bodies to go through puberty without a mess of artificial hormones inside us. This throws off everything natural about our cycles. Some girls never even experience a normal cycle until years and years later when they decide they may want a baby or they start to have bad side effects from the hormones.

Hormonal birth control causes us to not ovulate or to not have cervical fluid. Some girls and women do not even know what their cervical fluid is because they never had it due to the birth control pill. I'd love to explain in more detail about your cervical fluid. Understanding this helps you identify your fertile period.

If you are charting, you will know by your temperature pattern whether you are pregnant or not. If you have 18 days or more of high temperatures after ovulation has occurred, then you are most likely pregnant and should definitely confirm with a test. If your temperature falls back to the baseline before 18 days, you are not pregnant. This is also an awesome way to know you are about to start your period. No more carrying feminine products around all the time and worrying about wearing those white pants. With FAM, you know exactly when it's ok to wear the white pants!

If your temps confirm that you are not pregnant, yet you still have not had a period, FAM is a great way to figure out what is going on and if there is a health issue.

So this sounds great, but you are on hormonal birth control. You cannot observe these signs while using hormonal birth control, because it changes the natural process your body goes through each month. You will not have accurate temperatures, you may not be ovulating, and your cervical mucus may not be present. If you are ready to get off the pill and start learning about your body, please contact me or any Fertility Awareness Educator.
